From Beegum Gap  Sucess!

Very straight-forward hike to the 3rd highest CtyHP in Georgia. Middle-Ages looking summit tower has a solid staircase and made the views even better.

Bartram Trail From Hale Ridge Road  Sucess!

Kept on hearing that it was steep. Not so (the Kreuzweg in Grindelwald is steep). Nice views from the tower on top. Too bad it;s no longer a bald, tho.

Rabun Bald  Sucess!

Just about every year for the last 6 or 7 years with Dad. Last year Jessie and I got above a sea of clouds very early in the morning for awesome views. Better than Brasstown.

Three Forks Trail  Sucess!

Followed the Three Forks Trail to the summit. Finding the trailhead was easy, as there was a sign at the trailhead. Trail was cler and easy to follow. About 2.5 hours round trip (and I'm a slow hiker).

nice day today  Sucess!

Gorgeous hike up #211 (bottom trailhead) / Three Forks Trail (top trailhead). Never saw a soul either heading up or back down.

Since my last visit, some inconsiderate individual had built a fire circle right across the middle of the trail on the ridgeline that has the final climb to the top of Rabun Bald (just before the little rock garden).

Fire circle is now destroyed.

Better than Brasstown...  Sucess!

...by a large margin! This is an actual climb and is a summit that you must earn. I'm glad that Brasstown is easily accessible so that all can experience the feeling of being 'on top of the world' but, this is the way I like it! Nice views to the north of the granite slabs in the Highlands area!

Made it this time!  Sucess!

Took the easy and short route up the Rabun Bald Trail starting at the Kelsey Mountain Road dead end. (It's off NC Road 1628, but actually in Georgia.) Look for the yellow street name sign and the Forest Service Trailhead sign.

Easy mile-and-a-half. Brisk day, but the wind must've been gusting over 30 mph and made the "feels like" temp pretty cold. See photos from both this weekend and last weekend.

Will go again this summer. Bartram Trail from the north and from the south.

Didn't make it

Approached from the Rabun Bald Trail trailhead on Hale Ridge Road (USFS 7), so I was hiking through the Warwoman Wildlife Management Area.

About an hour in, I saw two bears rustling through the leaves looking for bugs. Shouted "Hello, bears!" and they took off. Kept chugging uphill for about another ten minutes, then surprised a third bear as I rounded a corner. Well, fair's fair: He surprised me, too.

Decided to go home. I thought bears hibernated?

Route Climbed: Three Forks Trail  Sucess!

About 2 inches of snow on 75 percent of the mountain. On the tower windspeeds were above 50 mph and the temperature was about 20 degrees. It was cold and the steepest parts were a little tough in the snow and ice without poles or crampons. However, beautiful views from the top made it worthwhile.

From Beegum Gap  Sucess!

Drove up to Beegum Gap. My measurements give 3.4 miles round trip and 1060 feet of elevation gain. Took me 65 minutes including ten on the top. Great views.
