SeanReedyCrater Lake loop with Stevens from Hope Valley  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 7, 2014

SeanReedy

Hiked up with my dogs in the snow from the pullout near Road 91/Alhambra Mine Road/Alpine Mine Road along HWY 88 in Hope Valley to the outlet on the east shore of Crater Lake. We then headed northwest up the melted out ridge north of the lake to join the partially snowy normal south ridge route from Red Lake Peak to Stevens. I thoroughly enjoyed traversing the ridge north to Red Lake Peak with partial snow coverage after tagging Stevens. We looped down the northeast slopes of Red Lake Peak, waving at Crater Lake to our left on the way back to the parking area along HWY 88. We saw no other visitors on a Monday, but lots of ski tracks and a few snowshoe tracks in the bowls and gullies of both peaks from the weekend.

Christmas hike of Red Lake followed by Stevens starting from the Carson Pass Sno Park. Somewhat tricky summit block on Red Lake, went up the false summit blocks first only to have redo the climb on the correct blocks. Could not locate register on Red Lake, but found one on Stevens. Tried to hook up with the TRT and PCT off of Stevens but wound up in snowshoe hell for 3 hours trying to get back to the Sno Park. Trip report is HERE.

Returning from a weekend of camping, I did a quick hike up from Carson Pass/PCT. Took me a little while to figure out the best route up the summit rocks.

Skinned up southwest ridge. Boney icy conditions near the summit. Otherwise gorgeous day. Spent an hour on top waiting for the snow to soften. Skied couloir down the south side to highway 88. Hoofed the mile back to Carson pass.

Started at 6:30am for Red Lake and then Steven's. A fun summit block, no clouds and views were fantastic. And the Summit register is gone.

We got faked out by the "peak" on the first ridge, before realizing we still had 700' up to go. Would not have found our way up without researching the "easy" route first. The wooden summit marker and summit register I have seen in other trip reports is gone...and yes, I was on the "true" peak :)

Easy climb up from the pass, snow was mostly firm and a bit blown off the ridges. Summit block is easy if you pass it to the right and climb a short chute on the far side (north) to an easy ledge on the back (west side).

Planned to start at Crater Lake, but couldnt quite get my car all the way up Alpine Mine Rd. Little extra hiking but eventually made it to the NE ridge and proceded to climb it. Climbed the false summit first cause it looked higher, but eventually made it over to the right one and found the register. Snapped a few picture then headed for Stevens.

This was a fun outing with a couple great friends, Adam and Z. Very windy and exposed on the summit, but we did manage to find some occasional shelter. Nice scramble to the summit.

Ridge traverse from the Carson Pass PCT trailhead.
Climbed the false summit block first, then went and found the non-exposed route to the true summit.

Continued along the ridge to Stevens, then dipped down and took the TRT/PCT back.
Pics are here

Got a late start. I got stuck behind a wagon train and pioneers in Meyers and got stopped one mile form the trail head due to road maintenance at Carson Pass. We didn't start hiking until 11:30 am. We made it to the top pretty quickly and I did my first ever class 4 climb and I don't think I want to do it again. Shortly after getting to the top we got chased down by thunders storms coming at us from all directions. Good times.

Quite the enjoyable morning adventure! I'd wanted to do this one for years. Deciding to do something besides go up the lifts & down groomed runs @ Kirkwood, finally did this, from the SnoPark overnight lot. ~2:30 up & exactly 1:00 down. The true summit provided some short, fun, & exposed climbing on what seemed to be relatively solid volcanic stuff. Summit views were phenomenal, weather was great, & I had the whole place to myself (on the way up anyway). Need to get more accustomed to the ungroomed Sierra Cement so I can do more backcountry boarding! I surmise I'll do this one again.
