Red Squirrel | [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
The Red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is pretty common in the Great Smoky Mountains. This one, on the Rainbow Falls trail up the side of Mount LeConte, was kind enough to pose for us.
The classic identification marks are all visible here; reddish-brown back, white belly, white rings around eyes. Some will have ear tufts in season, though this one has only the faintest wisps of tufts.

Voted 10/10 | The wildlife around LeConte is incredibly tame. On the Alum Cave Trail, I have had squirrels beg from inches away and have had deer walk within 5-10 feet - all due to the crowds this area sees. Despite that, LeConte is still one of my favorite peaks in the Smokies. | | Posted Mar 12, 2008 8:14 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks. I was amazed how easy it was to fire off a bunch of shots of this guy---I just lay down on a rock while my daughter squeaked at it. | | Posted Mar 12, 2008 9:59 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks, glad you liked it! Wish I could just lay down on the snow for a similar closeup of grizzlies, wolves, and the like. :) | | Posted Sep 22, 2008 10:25 am |
