Remains of a lookout

Remains of a lookout

are evidenced by cement pillars such as this one and scattered glass and myriads of nails that litter the summit. I found no benchmark and no register. The weather was starting to improve slightly about the time I took this shot but it was now time to head down. 6-18-06

Why...

are most lookout stations removed or destroyed? Seems it would be better to maintain them for National Forest rentals.

Re: Why...

I believe the rental concept came later and here in the northwest back in the 50's, 60's and 70's, the FS seemed to just want to destroy them. I find it sad as I love lookouts. Consider the junk around the remains of many of the peaks and the eyesores the remains have become. Vandals sometimes do them in but look at this one, a great example of what you are asking about.

Re: Why...

Funny, I find some lookouts to be eyesores themselves. I think Green Mountain up the Suiattle River must be better off w/o its lookout. And the one on Alpine Lookout on Nason Ridge is about as ugly as they come. Not all lookouts are toothsome.
