I had wondered about where the name Wall came from. Most of the peaks in the area are named after benchmarks only, if they have a name at all. Most benchmarks in the area take the name of nearby lakes. Wall Lake is actually several mile east of here, so I assume the benchmark was named for the wall-like feature above Big Elk Lake as you mention.
