Riding the Tides of Fate?

Riding the Tides of Fate?

Oak Creek Spire makes an appearance from a rocky knoll above the rugged Jacks Canyon Trail. Jacks Canyon was named after Jack Harrington, a cowboy who herded cattle back in the day. At that time, many catamounts (or mountain lions) were trapped and killed by ranchers, creating an overabundance of elk, deer and jackrabbits in Jacks Canyon. In 1991, there was an estimated 2,000 mountain lions left in Arizona. To the northwest of Jacks Canyon Trail, Oak Creek Spire and the columns of Schenebly sandstone supporting the 6400' summit of Lee Mountain come into view. From a beginning elevation of 4,300 ft, the trail ends at 6,300 ft on a high saddle where it meets up with the Munds Mountain Trail. Conclusion: Please stay awake when riding the tides of fate. And ... never say, "I don't know jack." September 24, 2009
