Vic HansonRR then RRR  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 30, 2013

Vic Hanson

Did the S. Kaibab down and Bright Angel up on Mar 23 as my final training for the Rim to Rim to Rim a week later. For the RRR we started down the S Kaibab at 4:00am, reached the north rim in 6 hr 40 min, was back at the top of the S Kaibab in 13h 18m 16s. My goal was 15 hours or less so I was very pleased. It was my first RRR and longest day hike ever by 10 miles. A long ways from the record time but not bad for 64 years old. God is good!

First time hiking R2R2R (or anything at the Grand Canyon). I started at 10:30 a.m. down South Kaibab, left Phantom Ranch at 1 p.m. Stashed my sleeping bag, thermarest and bivy at Cottonwood at 3:30 p.m. and headed to the North Rim. Arrived at North Rim in the dark at 7 p.m. and headed back to Cottonwood hoping to be able to just pick up my stuff and keep going. I felt great when I arrived at Cottonwood at 10 p.m. so I picked up my stuff and hiked to Phantom Ranch, arriving at 12:30 a.m. Then I started the long slog up the South Kaibab. It was quite a long hike up for me and I finally arrived at the top at 4:45 a.m! Total hike was 18:15. Next time, I'd definitely take less gear (probably 15 pounds less) and see if I could cut off an hour or two on the way back up. All in all, it was an epic hike and glad I finished!

N Kaibab to Bright Angel TH, in one tough day. Enjoyed it, but recommend spending a night or two in the canyon.

Ran Rim to Rim the first time when I was eleven---took just under 5 hours from North Rim to South via Bright Angel. I've run it many times since with the Sojourners Running Club and also with friends. Running up Kaibab was interesting a few years ago---ouch. A lot of times, we go do Havasupai the next day. Incredible marathon training.

South to North and back in 19 hours. A very nice, cool day made the hike easily tolerable. My advice to others who plan to do this; the details count! research, plan, execute.

Great hike into the Canyon. Went north to south with a camp at Phantom Ranch. The temperature swings were pretty insane too. 35 degrees at 0545 at North Kaibab TH and 113 degrees at 1530 along the Colorado at Phantom Ranch (78 degrees!). Overall a great trip and enjoyable. In the future I would probably look to do it earlier in the spring or later in the fall.

It's the Grand Canyon what can you say. Had great weather, met good people and we're successful. Good steady pace with plenty of rest and in in 11 1/2 hours.

It was great to meet you and your girlfriend on the trail. You two are great hikers! Thank you for lending us your pocket knife too! The OC Hiking Club and Unique Hikers on http://www.meetup.com/ are doing Whitney this summer. I'm on the Whitney waitlist for the unique hikers trip with Barb. Krai is doing Whitney with the OC Hiking Club.

Headed down North Kaibab early in the morning and went up Bright Angel. It wasn't the easiest thing with my thru-hiking gear to do in one day but what a beautiful day it was. Highly recommended!

It's hard to claim that something is life-changing, but this is a hike you will never forget. Our group had a rather late start (7:15) and we lollygagged along all morning, stopping at Ribbon Falls. We reached the Colorado at 3 PM, refilled our bladders, and headed for the South Rim. One of our hikers was moving at a slower than expected pace, so we adjusted. It turned into a great sunset hike up Garden Canyon and at dusk I refilled another bladder by the Indian Garden campgrounds. I pulled out my flashlight and visor clip light: we hiked to the base of Jacob's Ladder before we turned them on. As we climbed, we noticed the moon shining on the canyon walls to the west. It rose above the east walls about 8:00 and the scene was stunning. We actually walked the last long switchback with the lights off and reached the parking lot at 10:45. All the fears that you might have had about fatigue, dehydration, injury, blisters...they force you to be prepared. You sure feel a sense of accomplishment because you did it!

We went South to North to South, sleeping on the north rim. Loved the hike, especially North Kaibab. A bit warm on the way up the Bright Angel.

Solo Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim hike, my first real Grand Canyon hike, quite an experience! Total time: 19 hours. Started late, spent 3 hours on the North Rim trying to get some sleep.

R2R, South Rim-to-North Rim (05/19/2001): nice hike! Great views.

R2R2R (05/01/2011): Day-hiked South Rim to North Rim and back to South Rim with a friend via South and North Kaibab trails. 49 miles total (started from the Village, adding ~6 miles to the hike). 20 hours car-to-car. Nice weather, gorgeous views, good workout.

R2R (06/18/2011): Traversed from South to North Rim. Nice hike.

R2R2R (04/13/2013): Day-hike/run from South Rim to North Rim and back via South and North Kaibab trails. Total time: 15h45m

Rim2Rim2Rim

Cold on the rims and not too hot at the river.

Major crowds and a kind of tense atmosphere going down on the first day. This was the first day the N Rim was open and hordes of testosterone saturated ultra marathoners were making the first R2R of the year. Strange and overly intense folk! One even asked me "did you get a late start?". The nerve of the fellow!

Once they were out of the way, however, the Canyon was as lovely and welcoming as ever.

14 Hours S->N and under 12 N->S

Went North Rim to South Rim coming out Bright Angel. This was my first visit to the Canyon and was awe struck with the scenery. I'll definitely be back - but for a hike of a few days so I can enjoy the place more.
