Rock Mountain snowshoe  Sucess!

5 of us scrambled up to Rock Mountain on Sunday.
It is very steep below treeline. Light snow on top of frozen ground + rocks.
The lowest part still has part of the trail visible through snow, but disappears very quickly.
Once reach the ridge line, need snowshoes. There's a traverse on a steep hill with significant avalanche possibility. The snow yesterday was soft enough that we were able to make it through without issues.
After that it's fairly open and easy.
Going up to the false summit is steep, but the soft snow allows for zigzag.

Steep & Beautiful   Sucess!

Steep as far as a hike is concerned, but well worth the effort.

Another One Done  Sucess!

Took Trail 1587 from Route 2 with my dog. What beautiful views but damn it's a steep climb.

Via Highway 2 TH  Sucess!

Pretty cloudy today. No snow on the trail until somewhere around 5,800ft, above the steep the switchbacks. Mostly snow from there until summit (except on summit ridge, all dry). Poles are advised. Spikes and ice axe could be helpful in a couple of spots but not necessary. Beautiful at the summit when the clouds broke.

Great Hike  Sucess!

Top was covered in frost, lower section covered in sun. Made for a great visual - switchbacks made it easy to get up and down. Worth taking time to get to; great views from open summit.

Quick day  Sucess!

With Flanders. Rough drive in with my rig getting scraped on both sides by the encroaching saplings. Wet hike in to the meadow. Cool views. Then switchbacks up into the frost/rime covered trees. Excellent summit views. Met a Seattle Mountaineer named Tess who hiked down with us. Fun day.

Summit with camp at Rock Lake  Sucess!

Climbed via Trail #1587 from Rt 2. Great trail - but gets quite hot in exposed sections. Camped by Rock Lake - fantastic views all night and amazing stars. Summited in the morning and then made the trudge back down. Was woken up by what sounded like artillery shells - 2 of them specifically and then on the way down, was buzzed by a fighter jet. Summary - great peak, worth the hike - amazing views from summit.

Rock Mountain  Sucess!

Rainy on the west side, so we came over and hiked up Rock Mountain as a consolation prize. Still no views, but at least it was dry.

Check - done that!  Sucess!

From Trail 1587 (off Hwy 2) - should've had better boot grip & poles - was foggy on top with slick/melting snow - summitting required walking up, down & across & scrambling back down snow fields with possible avalanche conditions - twas worth it to place the taunting peak on my "check off" list and say, "been there, done that"! Dang that felt good!

Rock on!  Sucess!

With the MVP. A great fall hike up from highway 2. Traction devices and or an ace ax would have been nice for the firm snow we encountered just below the ridge but we managed with poles and step kicking.

nice backside trail

The trail was a nice hike and the views are great too. Need to come back during the snowy months and take the switchback trail straight up from the 2.

Via 2 Trails  Sucess!

Finally made it up via Snowy Creek in the summer. Three previous summits were on snow from Highway 2. Lower section melts early and upper half is a fun snow scramble.

Rock, Howard, and Mastiff  Sucess!

Bryan and I started at the Snowy Creek trail head at 8am. We found that a huge pile of avalanche debris had annihilated parts of the trail between 4600 and 5000 feet. We started with the summit of Rock Mountain and then worked our way over to Howard and Mastiff. We took twenty minute breaks on each summit and spent the rest of the day moving. We got back to the car at 8:30pm

Via #1587  Sucess!

Ceiling was around 4,800 feet, and had 50-100 feet of visibility the rest of the way to the top. Had no views, obviously, but it was still a great way to kill a few hours. Three easy hours up (navigation was tricky in places), less than 90 minutes down. Good times.
