Approach
The highest trailhead on the Yunodai trail on the south side of the mountain. Accessible only by car.
Route Description
From the trailhead it is a short hike through the forest to the first of
the lodges, the substantial two-storey Taki-no-koya or "Waterfall
Lodge". From here you switchback steeply up to a plateau or
shoulder with another lodge, Kawara-juku, or "Riverside Lodge"
beside a nice stream at 5052ft. From here you make your way over
to the bottom of the first snow-field. At the top you then transition
right to the second snowfield. From the top of this a steep trail
climbs to a sharp ridge which is the rim of a channel formed
by the last great eruption of this volcano. The trail then proceeds up
this ridge to a secondary summit. However, to reach the summit,
you must descend into the snow-filled channel and cross to the other side where there is a famous monastery. A rough rocky trail
leads up from the monastery to the rugged summit. There are
several high pinnacles here but the route to the highest is marked
on the rocks.
Essential Gear
Crampons would be useful but not essential.
