ALLT LWYD

A rounded grassy hill extending south-east of the main Beacons range and fringed by ugly forestry. This nondescript hill barely rises sufficently from the adjacent ridge to deserve separate summit status. Although unworthy of a detour, it does at least provide good views of the surrounding hills.
Marked by a cairn

BRYN

The cairn is to the north-east of the true summit which is unmarked.

WAUN RYDD

A flat featureless moorland fringed by steep slopes and cliffs. This summit marks the eastern end of the "breaking wave" Beacons escarpment. Although the approaches are interesting, the summit itself is not. However, it does make an excellent viewpoint for the Beacons to the west and the Black Mountains to the east.

TAL-Y-BONT RESERVOIR

The reservoir was created by daming the Afon Caerfanell to supply water to the Newport area. Construction began in July 1932 and on completion, six years later, the reservoir’s capacity was sufficient to provide everyone in the world with 4.5 litres of water each. It was officially opened in June 1939 by Alderman J.R. Wardell, Chairman of Newport Waterworks Committee,1935-51. In 1975, the reservoir was established as a local nature reserve. Its wild diversity of habitat attracts numerous wildfowl species including the grand winter visitors from Russia and Northern Europe, Bewick’s and Whooper Swan.

THE ROUTE

Group: Brecon Beacons
Number of summits: 3
Time required: 5 hours
Map: OS 1:25,000 Outdoor Leisure Sheet 11
Start: At 099197- the Water Authority car park near Tal-y-bont Reservoir.
Parking: Car park at the start
Nearest centre: Brecon (13km)

Opposite the car park, take the forestry road for 50m, cross the stile and follow the track. Bear left to the forest edge, cross the
stile at the corner and ascend to the first summit, Allt Lwyd. Head north-west, cross the saddle and climb sharply to the peat moor. Keep north-west, follow the path across the moor and after about 1km, near two small tarns, continue forward to the Waun Rydd summit cairn. From here drop down due north, pick up path descending from the left and at the fork, keep right. At the next fork, on level ground, bear right to the third and final summit, Bryn.
