Approach

The North Mount Elbert trailhead is the most popular route. From Leadville, go south on US24 for 3 miles, then turn right on CO 300 for 1 mile. Turn left on CO 11, following signs for Half Moon campground, and follow this road S and W for 7 miles (dirt) where it crosses the CO trail. Park at the Mt. Elbert trailhead at 10,050 ft., or if the lot is full, continue 1/4 mi. to the Mt. Massive trailhead. You can start from either spot. In both cases, the trails head south and join after about 1/4 mile on the CO trail.

Route Description

Go south 1.3 miles on the CO trail, climbing to about 10,600 ft. You will see a sign to the right pointing to Mt. Elbert. Take this trail and climb to the summit at 14,433 ft. Total distance is 4.5 miles one way.
