Approach
I backpacked in from Battle Park trailhead towards Lake Solitude. We camped at a mid-sized unnamed lake about halfway between Lake Solitude and Mistymoon Lake. The lake is about 0.25 miles north of the trail and is located at the foot of the southwestern ridge running off of Cloud Peak. The lake is hidden behind a saddle and some small peaks. The elevation here is about 10,300 ft., and it is about 9 miles from the Battle Park trailhead. You can also hike to this location by the Mistymoon Lake route.
Route Description
From here we climbed Cloud Peak from the foot of the southwestern ridge. You gain a lot of your elevation early on this route, and so it is MUCH MORE SCENIC than the classic route up the Paint Rock Creek drainage. After about the first half mile or so you are basically doing the rest of this hike with awesome panoramic views. Lots of Boulder hopping though, and we descended the traditional route, making a nice loop. Our summit day was about 8 miles round trip.
Essential Gear
I hiked/climbed this route in August, and it was almost completely ice free. No special gear was needed. If you climb it when there is ice up there, you may need an ice axe and crampons.
