Approach
Drive E from Twin Lakes on Highway 82. If coming from Leadville or Buena Vista on Hwy 24, turn on Hwy 82 and travel west for about 4 miles. At 2.4 miles turn left (N) onto Lake County Road 24. Drive past the Lakeview Campground to an overlook on the left (W) side of the road. Just past the overlook is a road that goes off to the left (W). Take this road as far as you can depending on what type of vehicle you have. The higher the clearence the farther you can go. When you reach the end of the road at about 1.8 miles park and proceed across the stream on the obvious trail.
Route Description
This is the Colorado Trail. Follow it for a few hundred yards to the Mt. Elbert Trail that turns to the left and goes directly to the summit. There's a sign indicating where the trail takes off. I believe this is easer than the standard route if you can drive to the end of the road. I haven't done the standard route. The trail joins the South Halfmoon Trail just below the summit.
Essential Gear
Standard hiking gear with lots of water. Usually there's no water source after you leave the Colorado Trail.
Miscellaneous Info
