Approach
The trailhead is directly across Highway 64 from the private campground in Eagle Nest. This is the only trail that hikers not affiliated with the Philmont Scout Ranch may take.
Route Description
There is a fork a short distance in from the trailhead, with both trails leading to Mount Phillips. The trail to the left has views of Eagle Nest and heads up a ridge before rejoining the other trail about four miles in. The total distance to the summit is nine miles one way. At the summit there are spots available for camping, but be sure to avoid the official Philmont camps farther away from the summit.
Essential Gear
No special gear is necessary, as this is a fairly easy hike. If you are spending the night on the summit, be prepared for cold, windy weather.
