Approach
From Wallace Lake, hike west down the use trail for about 2 miles until below the meadow where Wallace Creek and the creek that drains Wales Lake join. Leave the trail and head north for about 0.5 mile until reaching the southwest ridge of Mt. Barnard.
Route Description
Continue up the sand and talus ridge. Beware of the false summit! The slope flattens before reaching the actual summit. The rocks and terrain around the summit somewhat resemble Led Zeppelin’s “Houses of the Holy” album cover (minus the children). At the top there are a few boulders which present no problems.
Never been to 14,000 feet before? Stretch real tall! Jump high! Climb onto your partner’s shoulders! You might reach it.
Descent: either backtrack or head south down another sand slope towards a small lake at 11,545 feet. Either hike another 0.5 mile east until reaching Wallace Lake or continue south for a third of a mile until reaching the Wallace Basin use trail.
