Approach
Cone Peak Trail: Drive on Highway 20 to a shoulder pull-out 0.7 mile east of the summit of Tombstone Pass. Park here.
Route Description
This trail is significantly longer, but less steep, and you can see the famous wildflowers of the area along the trail. Start at the Cone Peak Trailhead, and follow the trail. 1.1 mile along the route the trail will enter a meadow filled with rare and unusual plants. After another 0.7 mile, you will reach a viewpoint partway up Cone Peak, with views of Tombstone Prairie and Iron Mountain. The trail does not go up to Cone Peak's summit. Follow the trail further to Iron Mountain. At a trail junction with the Iron Mountain Trail, turn left and go up several switchbacks to the summit.
Elevation Gain: 1385 feet.
Cumulative Elevation Gain: 1800 feet.
Round-Trip Distance: About 8 miles.
