Approach

If you're approaching in snow the easiest way to get to the west ridge is to leave to logging roads south of Dailey Prairie and make your way into the basin between the North and South Twins. From this basin ascend to the right and make your way onto the ridge. If you are approaching during the summer months after the snow has left you may find it easier to follow the logging roads higher on the ridge and forgo entering the basin altogether. This will save you from a lot of bushwhacking through overgrown clear cuts. From the point marked 4216 on the Cavanaugh Creek 7.5 USGS Map ascend east through forest along the ridge crest until reaching the West Ridge. Be prepared for a bit of steep bushwhacking. A few minutes after you decide that you must be going the wrong way because it really sucks, the trees open up and you'll be on the ridge.

Route Description

The ridge itself is a very straightforward climb. stay on the ridge crest where you can. Where the ridge crest is too difficult (it is low to mid fifth class in several places), traverse a bit to the right before finding an easier way up. Like the west ridge of North Twin Sister, the route gets more difficult as you near the summit. In comparison to North Twin Sister, South Twin's west ridge is longer and higher with a more strenuous approach. Unless you refuse to take the easier traversals under the more difficult ridge crest the route is also less technical. The descent is back down the ascent route.

Essential Gear

.The route to the summit is a scramble and requires no special gear save what you would normally bring on a day long trip in the north cascades. Opportunities abound for fifth class rock climbing however and if you feel like bringing a rope, a rack, and shoes, you'll certainly find a place to use them
