Route Description

Trailhead Elevation: 12500 ft (Mineral Basin)
One Way Distance per my GPS: 0.75 miles
Approximate Hiking Time one way uphill: 45 minutes

From Mineral Basin, look west to see Trico's south ridgeline. Black Bear Pass is on the terminal point of this ridgeline. Head west up the beautiful grassy slopes to gain the crest of the ridgeline at 12900 ft. Turn north and follow the ridgeline up a fairly steep rocky slope. Fortunately, the rocks here are large and the slope is not slippery. At around 13100 ft, the slopes ease up and the rest of the hike becomes very easy.

Should you chose to park at Red Mountain Pass and hike from there, your total distance will become 3.25 miles and the vertical will increase to 2303 ft.

Essential Gear

Nothing besides good hiking boots.
