ApproachSee the Getting There section of the main page to get to the trailhead.
Route DescriptionFirst part of the hike switchbacks through the forest. At the 1.8 mile point you emerge onto cinder meadows with wildflowers in the summer. Continue on another quarter mile to a large reddish cinder ridge that juts out towards Iron Mountain in the west. The trail forks here: left fork goes to Iron Mountain and the right fork climbs on top of the ridge. Head back right again on the ridge towards the summit where the trail mostly disappears into a small forest/thicket. Bushwhack through this until it clears and it is mostly a cinder scree climb up from there. Try to avoid the delicate and rare plants by hopping on rocks, dirt or other footprints.
You'll encounter a couple dikes before the final hike to the bare summit. Enjoy the views. Total length is just over two miles to the summit with an elevation gain of just over 1500 feet.
Essential GearNone needed but bring water.
