Approach

Total elevation gain from the top of the ski lift: 627 feet/191 meters. Starting elevation: 6683 ft./2037 meters.
Total elevation gain from the bottom of the ski lift: 2832 ft./863 meters. Starting elevation: 4478 ft./1365 meters.
Round Trip Distance from the top of the ski lift: 7.4 miles/12 km.

To avoid a one or two hour steep climb up 560 metres of ski slope, take the Thredbo Ski lift which is open year round. See the "Getting There" section on the Main page for information on getting to Thredbo. See the "Red Tape" section for ski lift ticket prices.

In the summer you can park very close to the ski lift at the Thredbo Ski Area and walk only walk a short ways. I would imagine in the winter you would have to park further away due to the ski crowds but it still shouldn't be long of a walk.

Route Description

2/3rds of the hike you will walk on a metal mesh walkway to protect the fragile tundra, the last 1/3 will be on a dirt trail. The total time to hike up should not take you any more than an hour and 1/2. If you do not get back to the ski lift before it closes you will have to walk back down to Thredbo.

Red Tape

The Thredbo chairlift is open 9am to 4.30pm daily for a cost of $19 one way or $24 round trip. If you miss the 4:30 p.m. deadline you will have to hike down 560 vertical meters to the bottom of the lift.

Toilets are located at the top of the ski lift.

Essential Gear

Nothing but a good set of runners. If you are from the northern hemisphere, remember that summertime in Australia is wintertime in your part of the world. Plan accordingly.
