Approach

From the town of Questa, New Mexico, drive less than a mile down highway 38 towards Red River. There will be a sign directing you to turn left towards Cabresto Lake. About 8 miles up the road, make a left turn at the sign directing you towards Cabresto Lake. It is 2 miles to a parking area from this point. The road is very rough and steep, passable by some 2x2 vehicles with good ground clearance. A 4x4 will make this road much easier. There is a fairly large parking area with a few campsites available if you desire to camp. You will be easily able to find the trailhead which passes by Cabresto Lake on the West.

Route Description

From the trailhead (Trail No. 82, Lake Fork Trail. ), hike approximately 6 miles to Hart Lake. It is another 3 miles up a steep trail to reach the summit of Latir Peak. This route requires you to climb up and over Latir Mesa to reach the summit. Continue on as far north as you can above timberline. Latir Peak will be the last bump before the land recedes back down to timberline.

There are plenty of nice campsites near Hart Lake. A base camp at Hart Lake is recommended unless you want a really long day with an 18 mile round trip hike. Hart Lake is a beautiful place.

Essential Gear

Nothing special is needed other than a good pair of trail runners. Mosquito repellant and sunscreen is highly recommended.
