Approach
This is the easiest route, but requires a $10 (may be higher by now) fee because the lakes are on the property of the Rio Costilla Cattle Association, and requires a 4x4. The fee station is about 12 miles up county road 196 heading east out of Costilla, NM. The self service fee station is located on the right after a really neat box canyon.
Drive approximately 4 miles until you reach a 4x4 road. Drive up this 4x4 road for 3 miles to a parking area located at the 3rd lake.
Route Description
Hike for 40 minutes up to the last lake before Latir Peak. Scramble around to the right (north) and up to the summit of Latir Peak. For a nice round trip, continue on over to Latir Mesa and back down and around the south side of the lake back to the trail.
Essential Gear
Nothing special is needed other than a good pair of trail runners. Mosquito repellant and sunscreen is highly recommended.
