Approach

From Santa Fe, head east on I-25 for about 10 miles. Exit highway 63 towards the town of Pecos. Drive about 10 miles north on a nice paved road until it dead ends at Jack's Creek Campground. The trail starts here.

Route Description

At Jack's Creek Campground, begin hiking on trail #25. The trailhead elevation is 8400 ft. The trail begins an ascent due north, then climbs a series of switchbacks up to a forested ridge. The trail continues north and at about mile one and 1/2, the trail splits. Take the left hand split towards Pecos Baldy Lake which will now be trail # 257. At mile 6 you will arrive at the beautiful Pecos Baldy Lake where it will join with trail # 251.

Continue heading north climbing up and onto Trailriders Wall , a beautiful high alpine mesa giving you your first views of the Truchas Peaks. Continue on north and begin your ascent of South Truchas Peak. There will be one false summit that you might as well climb over. Going around the peak would take about as much effort as climbing over it.

At the summit of Truchas Peak, you will see Medio Truchas Peak (13,060) directly north of you and Middle Truchas Peak will be on your left about 0.7 miles away as the crow flies. North Truchas will be further off to the North and a little to the right of Medio Truchas. Scramble across the ridge between Medio and Middle Truchas Peaks. You can bypass Medio Truchas Peak (unnamed on the USGS map) if you choose on the left. Make an easy scramble over to the summit of Middle Truchas and then admire the rugged north face. If you want to make a complete a tour-de-Truchas, hike back over to Medio Truchas and then traverse a nice class 3 ridge 1 and 1/2 miles over to North Truchas Peak.

Essential Gear

Early in the season an Ice and campons are highly recommended. Beware of afternoon thundershowers. Lightning will be your biggest hazard.
