Route Description

From the Loveland Pass parking area, proceed northeast up the southwest ridge. Bypass or go over point 12,915 at mile .82. A ridge stroll follows to point 13,152 with some gradual elevation gain. At this point, Mount Sniktau proper comes into view another half mile to the northeast, but a little over one hundred feet must be lost, and almost two hundred feet must be re-climbed to gain the conical summit at mile 1.68.

Return the same route, which means re-climbing the one hundred feet back to point 13,152. A contour on the west (right) side of the ridge may involve traversing steep tundra or occasional loose talus. Use your informed judgment when deciding on your return route. Do not contour these slopes in the winter or in winter conditions!

There are no practical bail routes from the ridge in the event of a summer thunderstorm. If thunderstorm activity seems likely, do not attempt the route.

Essential Gear

In winters with light snow accumulations, hiking boots and appropriate winter gear are all that is needed. In years of heavy snow, snow shoes and/or skis are mandatory. Poles or an ice axe are a good idea but optional.
