Approach

The Pointe de Drône is located a little west of the pass of Gd. St. Bernard on the border between Italy and Switzerland. The trailhead therefore is on top of the pass at 2469m of altitude. To get there be sure to miss the tunnel - you need to get to the top!

The normal ascent starts directly at the Pass of Gd. St. Bernhard at the hospice on the swiss side of the pass directly behind the dog kennels (anybody heard of St. Bernhards dogs? They are bred here).

From the kennels you first climb a former skiing hill (an old lift is still standing but out of use). A little further on you reach a concrete platform from which beautiful views open towards Mont Blanc and Grandes Jorasses. This is the last rest before the ferrata to Gran Chenalette starts The ferrata is beautifully kept - there is no need for any special equipment you rather see too many ladders and cables.

From Grand Chenalette (2889m) follow the ridge towards Pointe de Drône and enjoy the views of the giants around you.

The route can be combined with the route via Fenêtre de Ferret. From the Fenêtre you can descend to the Lacs de Ferret and do a round trip over a couple of other passes or head for Pain du Sucre to climb tht one as well (the ascent doesn't take more than an hour).

Essential Gear

Though a ferrata, normal hiking gear is sufficient.
