Approach
The Base of the climb is Rifugio Vittorio Sella, a very comfortable and famous hut situated at a height of 2584 meters in a green meadow with a lot of beautifull wildlife.
There are several ways to reach this rifugio, but if you want to make this a 2 day trip, follow the route discription.
Route Description
Day 1: Starting point is a place called Valnontey (1660m.), about 3 kilometer south of Cogne. From here you start the trip to Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2584m.)
Walk in southern direction (so don't follow the path to the Rifugio Sella!) on a broad path left of the river. It leads you to an open spot with big rocks and a few cabins. This pace is called Valmiana (1729m.). Keep walking in the same direction to the brige (Ponte dee 'Erfaulet) and cross the river. The path is climbing from this point and ends at Casolari dell 'Herbetet. There are two little cabins which belong to the parkrangers. You can't sleep here, but it's a nice place to rest. There is fresh water and the view to the other side of the valley is magnificent.
Walk in northern direction on a small path with some steep gully's. Pass the Laghetto, a small lake and you are almost there. In the distance you can see Rifugio Vittorio Sella (5 - 7 hours walk).
Sleep in the rifugio, enjoy the sunset and start about 06.30 a.m. with your ascent.
Day 2: First walk in western direction and follow the path to Colle Lauson (there is a sign with Colle Lauson on it) . By p. 2841 is an intersection. Go to the right in Northern direction and walk to the waterfall. Now a steep walk to the Colla della Rossa (3195m.) with a good view on the Monte Rosa.
From the Colla, staying at the same altitude, following the track at the slope on your lefthand-side (some scrambling). From here it's only a steep walk to the ice-field. You can see the summit and the ridge in south-western direction. Put on your crampons! (4 -5 hour walk with return in Sella).
From the Rifugio leads a path in Eastern direction directly to Valnontey (2 -3 hours walk).
Map and Essential Gear
I did this one during the hot summer of 2003. The wasn't much snow on the final ascent. The guide told me that normaly you have to use crampons, ice axe and rope.
