Approach

Approach as for Napes Needle, Needle Ridge is the buttress directly behind the needle.

Route Description

Climb up to the gap behind the needle and the mountain, make a belay.

1 (40m). Climb up a polished slab to a spike runner (possible belay), best to continue up a steep wall (crux) to a good ledge
2 (30m). Continue more easily up the ridge
3 (30m). Climb the ridge to an overhang, avoid this on the left or right and belay.

Scramble up the spiky ridge to below westmorland's crags. From here a path leads to the summit.
You can also descend to the right just after the spiky ridge makes a sharp turn to the left. Go down a gully and descend a grotty scree chute to below the crags, follow the climbers traverse back to the base of the route.

Essential Gear

1 rope
