Route Description

Like any other canyon outing, the summit is at the beginning and end. Be prepared for a moderate uphill hike, probably in warm temperatures upon returning to your car after a long day.

Descend north into Withers Canyon, following the jeep road, which briefly narrows to a single track trail as it rounds a bend due east. The trail widens and becomes a road again as it bends south and enters the main Picketwire Canyon.

The road becomes relatively flat with minor undulations for the rest of the hike as it wanders generally southward through the broad bottomed canyon. Pass an old homestead ruin at 1 mile, adobe ruins at 3 miles, the mission ruins and cemetery at 3.7 miles, a memorable and contorted cottonwood at 4.6 miles, a bulletin board at 4.7 miles, a restroom at 5 miles, where you veer left, and the track bed at 5.3 miles.

Some dinosaur tracks are evident as you approach the Purgatorie River, including those of the Allosaurus. To view the majority of the tracks, a crossing the Purgatorie River is necessary. In early spring, there are several places to cross. Crossing in late spring may not be possible due to high run-off.

A spur trail along the river leads to several good spots for crossing above some “falls.” The water is shallow is enough for a boot crossing, but after the lengthy walk, a bare footed stroll through the water is refreshing.

Most of the dinosaur tracks are on the other side of the river and are immediately evident once you set foot upon the hard limestone layer of rock. A mixture of Apatosaur, Duckbill and Allosaur tracks are displayed in abundance. Enjoy these ancient treasures from a time we can never hope to relate to in our planet’s history!

Return the same route, remembering you have an uphill hike waiting for you at the end of the road. Be sure to save plenty of water for this pull out of the canyon, particularly if you anticipate a warm afternoon or evening.

Essential Gear

1 gallon of water per person minimum along with extra food items.

Hiking boots are not essential, but be sure your walking shoes are in good condition. Be advised of the possibility of rattlesnakes, which might be incentive to wear boots.

Depending on the time of year, a jacket or warm clothing is advised. A hat or other shield from the sun is a must, along with plenty of sunscreen.

Don’t forget your camera for the dinosaur tracks and other points of interest!
