Approach

See the "Getting There" section for directions to the trailhead.

Route Description

Walk past the gate and follow the utility road as it switchbacks up a prominent ridge generally in a west-northwest direction. After about 5 switchbacks and maybe a quarter-mile, the road ends at a small utility box.

Leave the road and start hiking up the steep forested slopes. The trees will be blazed with white dots. Simply follow these white blazes as the route gains high on the ridge and generally stays just below and west of the rock spires that line the ridge.

The summit is reached after about another 3/4 mile and about 5 false-summits. The top is marked by a cairn and offers great views of Harney Peak and the nearby hills and ranges.

Beware! Pay attention to the blazes. On my visit in May 2004, there was a section of downed trees. I had to use my gut instincts to stay on the route. Coming down I actually got off route and ended up hiking out at a different place where I came in... Attention to detail is a must on this hike.

Essential Gear

A good map, compass and GPS will be very useful, despite the route being blazed most of the way. The forest cover is so thick that if you get off route, you will have trouble getting back on.

Miscellaneous Info

If you have information about this route that doesn't pertain to any of the other sections, please add it here.
