Approach
The approach for this route starts at the South Mineral Creek Trailhead or for those with a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle, at the 4x4 parking (detailed description on main page). From here your first objective is to make the scenic hike into Ice Lakes Basin. This is where the climb begins. Due to the length of this approach, many choose to climb Vermillion with a backpack into the basin.
Route Description
From high in Ice Lakes Basin, hike southwest towards Vermillion and Fuller Peaks. You will be at about 13,000 feet once below these two peaks. Climb southeast up a steep slope, often snow covered, to the Vermillion-Fuller saddle at 13,500 feet. From the saddle, hike northwest on a climbers trail initially on the ridge then dropping to the south side. Follow this trail to a loose gully and climb the gully for about 100 feet. At this point you can see the summit above you. Scramble up loose rocks to the top and enjoy the view. Most of the hike is class 2 with a couple sections of class 2+(loose gully and loose summit).
The round trip distance is 10 miles from South Mineral Campground and 8.5 miles from the 4x4 parking.
The elevation gain is 4,100 feet from South Mineral Campground and 3,500 feet from the 4x4 parking.
Essential Gear
An ice axe is a must, due to the amount of snow usually in the basin. It can be a fun glissade down from the Vermillion-Fuller saddle.
