Approach

See getting there (Oak Grove Trailhead)

Route Description

Trailhead elevation = 6,540’
Summit Elevation = 10,365
Trail mileage one way = 4.0± miles
Elevation gain = 4,250’

Follow the trail leading off from the Oak grove parking area in a westerly direction for a short distance to a sign “Pine Valley Mountain - 3 miles”. Take trail that leads right and begins to gain some serious elevation. After 2.1 miles, 3,350’ of elevation and a load of switchbacks you will arrive to the crest of the trail (elevation 9,850). Continue on trail while losing a 150 of elevation to the intersecting with Summit trail (2.25 miles, elevation 9,730). Turn left and follow to Deer Flats, (2.4 miles, elevation 9,800’). Continue west to Further Water, (3.0 miles, elevation 9,820). At the southwest end of Further Water (open field area) the trail starts back into the woods and up hill again. After about 100 yards (3.35 miles, elevation 9,930’) I decided to bushwhack south with a gentle gain of elevation to the ridgeline east of the summit (3.73 miles, elevation 10,310’). Follow the ridge west to the summit (3.9 miles, elevation 10,365’)

Essential Gear

Lots of water during the hot times of the year. Water was running at Further Water, but I wouldn't always count on it.
Bug Spray, Sun screen and ass wipe.
