Approach

Take the North Fork of the Skokomish trailhead for 14 miles until reaching Home Sweet Home which is directly beneath Mount Steel. The climb starts from First Divide, a mile before Home Sweet Home campsite. The total trip should take two full days of hiking, with a round trip of 30 miles to and from the summit of Mount Steel.

Route Description

From Home Sweet Home it is possible to hike across the meadow towards Steel, throught the forest, crossing a shallow creek. From there ascend the east face of Steel. Follow the clumps of tree's growing to the right of the snowfields and a large scree slope on Steel. Scramble up the meadowy mountside and forest until reaching the main summit rock of Steel above and to the right of the highest meadow. From there, basic scrambling is necessary to reach the summit, which is directly above a snowfield to it's left. Elevation gain is about 1800 feet from Home Sweet Home.

Essential Gear

Crampons and an Ice Axe should be used in early season climbing. Ropes are not neccessary for this route. Proper winter clothing should be worn out of season. Bring plenty of water and any gear necessary for an emergency situation...the 10 essentials. Make sure if you are going alone that family, friends and the local Ranger Station know where you are going and when you are planning to return. But preferably don't go alone.
