Approach

Take HWY 138 to Pearblossom. Turn south on Longview road. Turn east on East Avenue 'W' / Valyermo Rd. Follow Valyermo Rd for approximately 8 miles to Big Rock Creek Rd. Follow Big Rock Creek Rd to turn off for South Fork Campground, approximately 4 miles from Valyermo Rd. (a well groomed dirt road). Park at South Fork Campground walk North over the stream and start hiking up the East Ridge.

Route Description

After walking north over the stream, many starting variations exist. The more you continue up the South Fork River, the harder the start (loose 3rd and 4th class scrambling). Progress up the ridge until you reach a flat spot (6,600ft) with some manzanita. Continue along the flat ridge until you can descend into a notch (6,000ft). From the notch, scramble up (some 3rd class climbing on loose rock is required) to the next peak (6,900ft). Continue up the ridge to the top of Mt. Williamson (8,214ft).
While there is no trail along the ridge, the ridge line is straitforward and only requires about 50ft of bushwacking through some low manzanita near the top of the first peak (6,600 ft). Descend the way you came or go down the Williamson Trail (2.1 miles) to the South Fork Trail (5.2 miles) to your vehicle.

Essential Gear

Ice axe and crampons may be required if done between Dec-March.
It can get hot during the summer.
