Approach

Start at the cleared area along FR-152 (see main page)

Route Description

From the parking area, follow the trail north. It will gain and drop along the way, and sometimes stay on the ridge's east side, other times on its west. About 2 miles the trail gains moderately steeply and a signed side trail leads to the rocky/brushy east summit of McKnight Mountain. Wonderful views!

For those wanting the other 10,165 point, descend back onto the main trail, go north a few hundred feet as it descends to a junction. Go left on Tr82 about 1/4 mile to where it crests slightly. With compass, maintain a near true-north bearing for about 300 feet in the thick trees. Using instincts try to go 'up' as often as possible. The second 10,165-foot summit should be easily found ... eventually. A small rock cairn abuts a tree near a large downed snag.

The whole hike is about 5 miles r/t with maybe 700 actual feet of gain.

Essential Gear

Compass and map. GPS may not do much in the thick tree cover. Long pants for the trees.
