Route Description

This route is approximately 3 miles long with an elevation gain of 1500 ft.

From trail #15, hike about 1/2 mile up through a beautiful forest into a grassy meadow where you will meet trail #25, The Crest Trail. Take a left turn on The Crest Trail and hike 2 miles up to a ridgetop overlooking the valley to the west where White Sands National Park is located. Make a left turn on the Lookout Mountain Trail #78 and hike approximately 1/3 of a mile down along an unmaintained trail. You will soon come across an open area which is a Ski Apache trail. Hike up and pass the lift house to the right. Scramble up a rocky trail about 100 ft. to the summit and enjoy the views.

Per Jessicahiker: "The signs marking the intersection with trail 25 was missing. Not sure if that has been rectified."

Essential Gear

Trail runners will do fine except for periods during the winter when snowshoes will be required. Bring at least a gallon of water during the summer months. Beware of afternoon thunderstorms and be prepared for high winds due to the 7,500 ft. elevation gain from the west.
