Approach
From Gusinje drive 4km(paved road)
or walk 1 hour to Donje Vusanje village(altitude 970m).
In Vusanje, pass the army watchtower, turn right and cross the bridge
over Grlja river. Now, you are inside the Ropojan valley.
Route Description
Part 1
Ropojan (Grlja) river valley - Zastan plateau (elevation 1384m)
Around 4 1/2miles or 7km distance. Walk direction SW up and down the carriage road that cuts through the middle of the glacial valley.
Grlja river is always on your right.
After 5km or so road splits, turn left (carriage road again) and uphill
folowing the carriage road through the woods,
till you reach the Zastan plateau (1384m altitude)
In the middle of the plateau, is the old watchtower.
Part 2
From Zastan plateau, north uphill through the woods
till the boundary stone (1780m elevation), 1 hour walk.
Hike dowwn through Buni e Jezerce (valley of the lakes),
first two twin lakes are on your rightside, another one on the left and
slightly behind you.
walk uphill the first pass (and bypass the abandoned Albanian bunker), from the pass, youll see another lake on your right side,
topped by sharp redcoloured rock.
Go further direction South untill you reach the
5th and largest lake Liqeni Madhe
pass it from the right side,
ascend the Qafa e Vogl saddle,
descend direction southeast into the hollow filled with snow,
traverse uphill (bit of bouldering) folowed by
another descent into another snow-filled hollow,
another bit of bouldering takes you to
Qafa Emal saddle (2350m altitude).
Final part
On your right,
you should notice short, yet snow-filled culoir
curved inside grey limestone wall.
Scramble through the culoir (careful, loose rocks)
at the top of it, turn left and walk steep uphill
till the Maja Jezerces roof.
Path from Emal saddle to the top is marked with
thin vertical red lines, rest of the route is unmarked.
Essential Gear
For high season:
Hiking boots, warm clothes, youll find walking poles very useful,
warm clothes and wind/rain protection clothes (does rain often).
If you plan to stay in the area for any longer time then 24hours,
tent or bivouac equipment.
