Approach

Take 441 either from Cherokee NC or Gatlinburg TN to Newfound Gap. Park in the vast lot and hike the AT north to Mount Kephart.

Route Description

This is a very simple walk-up. Follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail for about 2.8 miles to the summit of Mount Kephart. The summit is clothed in evergreens and can be hard to distinguish from the rest of the ridgeline. Total elevation gain is about 1200 feet.

Essential Gear

Good boots, hiking staff, water. Warm clothing in winter; perhaps instep crampons.
