Approach
Take the Piute Pass Trail from North Lake and go over Piute Pass. Not long after you pass Piute Pass you will come across an unmarked use trail that heads north and takes you past Lower Desolation Lake and on to Desolation Lake. You will head west from Upper Desolation Lake to Pilot Knob. Mesa Lake, west of Upper Desolation Lake is a great camping spot.
Route Description
From Upper Desolation Lake in Humphrey's Basin head west and pass along the south shore of Mesa Lake. From Mesa Lake continue west and pass just north of Square Lake. From Square Lake continue west toward Knob Lake. Stay to the north of Knob Lake and then head northwest to the obvious saddle east of Pilot Knob. It's a class 2 scramble to the summit from the saddle east of Pilot Knob.
The trip is 1/2 a day from Upper Desolation Lake and an overnighter from North Lake. The total one-way mileage is approximately 12 to 13 miles, with the hike to Upper Desolation Lake being about 9 miles from the trailhead.
Elevation gain from North Lake to Pilot Knob is just over 4,000 feet total, and the elevation gain from Pilot Knob back to North Lake is about 1,100 feet total.
