Approach

From Equity mine above Creede, see mainpage.

Route Description

Park at 11,500', past (above) the Equity mine where the road turns steeply west up a hill. Rather than hiking to San Luis Pass, trails can be followed to the 12,300' saddle NE of the parking zone. Drop to the other side of the divide and pickup the Skyline/Colorado Trail. Follow this east 3 miles to the 12,620' saddle on the south ridge of San Luis. This is easily followed to the summit. Having used both routes on San Luis, I found them about the same, time-wise. Though I found the mileage to be less on this route, there is more up and down. I preferred this route for scenery, history and amenities.

Essential Gear

Dayhike.
