ApproachFor the Panamint Valley Ridge route, from Highway 190 in Panamint Valley, follow the graded road branching north from Highway 190, two miles east of the junction with Panamint Valley Road. Follow this road 5.7 miles to where the road curves towards the mts and head s toward the Big Four Mine. It's 4x4 road from here and be careful. When I was there last part of the road was wiped out from a flash flood, and it was easy to stray off the right path
Route DescriptionThis is around a 4000 ft climb from near the Big Four Mine and about 6-7 miles. From the 2wd parking it's about 8 miles and 5000 ft of gain.
Head up the ridge that is just north and along side the Big Four Mine. The mt above you appears to be a convoluted mess of ridges, but once on the ridge above Big Four Mine, the route is clear from lack of options. It's a long slog to the top. Be careful not to confuse the summit of Peak 6580 with Panamint Butte. It's a more attractive summit, but it's 4 feet lower. But it does have a summit register and great views, so bag it while you're there!!
Essential GearTrekking poles and scree gaiters come in handy on this route. Other than that, just a camera to snap the views
