Driving Directions
Read the 'Getting There' section on the 'Main Page' for driving directions to the Phantom Creek Trailhead near Alpine, MT.
Approach Route Description
This approach hike begins at the Phantom Creek Trailhead and joins the Standard Route at the crest of the Froze-to-Death Plateau. The trailhead is easy to find. It is along the west side of the East Rosebud road only .5 mile south of the village of Alpine. Eventhough this approach to Granite Peak maybe longer and gain more elevation than the West Rosebud approaches, it is the prefered route by many for several reasons. One, it avoids the endless switchbacks that are encountered on the Standard approach up West Rosebud Canyon. Two, it gains elevation more slowly allowing a bit more time to acclimatize before trekking across the FTD Plateau at more than 10,000 feet.
The route is straightforward on a well established trail. There is only one good camping area along the trail, and that would be at Slough Lakes. There are numerous protected areas and the water is plentiful here. You should also be able to find water above Slough Lakes in several places along the trail.
Beginning at timberline, you will climb a few minor swithchbacks before reaching the FTD Plateau. There will be an obvious wooden post along the trail marking the point at which you meet the trail coming up from the West Rosebud Canyon. At the wooden post you will turn left (south) and begin your trek across the vast plateau towards Granite Peak.
Essential Gear
