Approach

Follow the same dirt road from Lake Irwin. Instead of veering west continue on until its end. There are some mild rock steps on this road but my Subaru didn't have a problem.

Route Description

At the roads end hike west into the basin of Owens East Bowl. The chutes come down off the east ridge. The top of Jenga Chute is just visible in the left of the photo. There are 3 chutes coming off the ridge. The maximum steepness is 50 degrees at the top. This route should be done on consolidated spring snow. The top most couloir holds snow throughout the summers and is especially nice for some easy access skiing in August.

Essential Gear

Crampons, Ice Axe and Helmet are advisable. A fall down the westernmost chute will have potentially fatal consequences. This is why i say AI3. These are the rotten Elk Mountains and rock fall is to be expected.

Miscellaneous Info
