Approach

East Face, South Summit, Cathedral Rock.

Route Description

This is another classic Garden route. 3 pitches.

This is easy to spot. It is a large dihedral in the center of this face.

P1: Climb to a double bolt anchor.

P2: In the dihedral, jam to the second set of double bolts. The crux of the route is here - a pretty exposed layback.

P3: Scramble to the top. No set belay point here.

Descent: There are two options. Some parties rappel from the second set of bolts. Double rope required. You can also go to the top and scramble down the south ridge of Cathedral.

FA: Harvey Carter, 1959.

Essential Gear

Large gear - stoppers, hexes, cams. Slings, quickdraws. Double ropes are needed to rap from the second set of anchors.

"I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."   --Albert Camus
