Approach
The quickest approach to Lake Italy is via the Little Lakes Valley. After passing Chickenfoot Lake, head cross-country in between Gem Lakes and Treaseure Lakes to the east side of Dade Lake. From Dade Lake approach Cox col (the low point to the northwest of Bear Creek Spire) via a class 3 scramble.
From the col, head down the valley towards Lake Italy. Make sure to stay on the northern shore of Toe Lake and Lake Italy, as the south side is more loose and seems to have snow pack later into the year. The climb starts at the base of Mt. Hilgard near the outlet of Lake Italy.
Route Description
From the outlet, head up the south slope towards the southeast ridge. The large chute/slope that becomes visible on the South Face is a class 2 walkup, but is rather loose. Staying to the southeast east on the ridge makes for a pleasant climb over more solid rock. After obtaining the first prominent bump on the ridge, the summit will become visible to the northwest. From here angle across the south face along the base of the ridgeline, and obtain the summit by walking around its western side.
Essential Gear
Ice Axe and Crampons might be necessary for the route up to Cox col from Dade Lake depending upon the time of year. No climbing gear is needed for the actual climb of Hilgard.
