Approach
To access the Southwest Ridge Route of Blackman Peak from Ketchum, Idaho, drive north on Idaho 75 for roughly 45 miles up and over Galena Summit until reaching the well marked 4th of July Creek Road that leaves the highway leading to the east.
Follor this improved dirt road 10 long miles to the foot of the White Clouds at the 4th of July Lake Trailhead.
Route Description
From the 4th of July Lake Trailhead, continue on the road a few hundred yards and park in a large grassy meadow at the base of Blackman Peak.
Walk up the road that is gated (only to keep motorized vehicles out) that switchbacks through old mining digs in the hills below Blackman.
After only 3/4 of a mile, the trail comes to high saddle on the western slopes of the peak. At this point, leave the trail and climb the southwest ridge through the trees. A few hundred feet below the summit the route breaks through the trees and follows the white granite ridgeline to the summit. Look for a faint cross-country trail that has formed from the various groups of animals that roam the slopes of this peak. Take the trail to the summit.
Essential Gear
No ropes, crampons, etc. needed.
