Approach

From the Visitor's Center, drive down the Chain of the Craters Road, and park at the parking area for the Thurston Lava Tube.

Route Description

This hike descends 400 feet through rainforest, across the crater floor, passes Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return via the crater's rim. The trail is marked well. Ensure you follow the cairns.

If you only have time to do one hike at HVNP, do this one. It's short, lets you see a lot of stuff, and is very easy.

This hike is 4 miles round trip. You will gain and lose 400 feet going to and from the Crater Floor.

Essential Gear

Sturdy shoes. Do not wear any open toed shoes. The lava will eat up your feet! Bring plenty of water.

"I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."   --Albert Camus
