Approach

Tooltip for IE: Birnhorn

From the trailhead at the parking lot in the Loferer Hochtal (850 meters) follow the signs directing you towards the von Schmidt-Zabrierow Hütte. Ascend through forest for 1 hour until you come to the site of the ruined Scheffauer Alm. Here the forest thins out. The good path ascends in zigzags for 2 hours up the meadows of the Mittleres and Oberes Treet until it reaches the karst field of the Grosse Wehrgrube. The hut (1966 meters) comes into view and it takes another 30 minutes to reach it. 200 meters before the hut the path to Grosses Ochsenhorn branches off to the east.

Route Description

As the name implies this route is the easiest and most common way of ascending Grosses Ochsenhorn. The climb involves an ascend of nearly 1700 meters or 5 hours from the Loferer Hochtal or 600 meters (2 hours) from the hut.
From the above described trail junction follow the red paintings marking the route. The now indistinct track stays level and crosses the Grosse Wehrgrube for 1hour until it reaches a bluff where the trail climbs down (70 meters) to the smaller karst field of the Kleine Wehrgrube directly under the West Face of Grosses Ochsenhorn.
Climb up to the beginning of the Northwest Flank at ca. 2150 meters) in 30 minutes. From here you have a great view of the North Face of the peak. The Northwest Flank is an indistinct though broad ridge and the route climbs some escarpments until a broad band on the western side of this ridge is reached after another 30 minutes. Follow the band that leads you to directly under the summit. A short climb up another small escarpment sees you on the top.
