Approach

Start at the Church Mountain Trailhead

Route Description

Round Trip 10 miles
Elevation Gain 3,900ft
High Point 6,315ft
Class 3 Rock (can be class 4 when wet)

From the trailhead (2,400ft) Follow the trail 3 miles until you reach open meadows at ~4,900ft. Up until this poin the route is exactly the same as the main trail. The regular route would go left and switchback up a steep hill that is dangerous in winter

This area can become dangerous if snow conditions are likely to produce avalanches, check the Avalanche Report, you will be on South/Southwest/Southeast aspects all day between 10 and 45 degrees.

Once in the meadow the route then traverses Westerly up the right side of hill for about a mile and 800 vertical feet. The route then flattens out for about a half mile as you head Southwest, staying left of cliff bands and heading straight up a nearly 45 degree slope for ~350ft towards a bowl below the summit. Our party was lucky that snowmobiles had been here the day before and left this steep slope perfect for french technique.

Once in the large bowl head for the highest visible point, climbing ~200+ft up 45 degree slopes. The actual summit block requires an easy class 4 (3 when dry) scramble with a good run-out. Enjoy the views and rehydrate. The route could easily be skinned and would provide some good, if not short, skiing.

Essential Gear

  • Snowshoes or Skis
  • Ice axe, maybe crampons
  • Don't need a rope
  • Basic snow climb stuff
