Approach

The hike begins at the signed Avalance Peak trailhead at Sylvan Pass. See the getting there section for more details.

Route Description

Round Trip Aprox. 4-5 miles, 1772 ft elevation gain.

From the trailhead, follow the road east along the shore of Eleanor Lake a few hundred yards until reaching the edge of the lake. At this point, a waterfall will be visible to the south on a tributary of the lake. Follow this tributary up the steep slopes by bushwhacking or following faint game/climbers trails. The terrain will flatten shortly into a small basin where you will find a small pond (outlet of the stream you are following) and be treated to a great view of the peak. From the pond, travel east (climbers left when looking at the peak) and ascend steep slopes onto the north ridge of the peak. Follow this ridge a short distance until it flattens out, then exit the ridge climbers left down a small slope into the basin on the east side of the peak. This is extremely important, if you follow the north ridge all the way to the summit you will encounter 5th class climbing on extremely loose and exposed terrain. From the small basin on the east side of the peak, gain the obvious east ridge and ascend to the summit.

Essential Gear

In summer, standard hiking gear is all that is required. However, I HIGHLY recommend bear spray after working several summers in the park. Snowshoes and an axe would be needed for early season ascents.
