Approach

See the main page for directions to the parking area. You will continue up the wash northwest for 1 to 1.5 miles before starting up the east side of Old Dad Mountain.

Route Description

From where you park in Jackass Canyon continue up the wash northwest for about 1 to 1.5 miles (depending on where you end up parking). When you reach a prominent canyon (drainage) along the east face of Old Dad Mountain head up the ridge to the north (right) of the canyon or up the canyon itself to the summit area. Old Dad Mountain has a summit register and a benchmark on it.

I went up the ridge to the North of the canyon and came down north of the ridge in a less prominent canyon, which was a little more challenging than the ridge but fun. I didn't go up the prominent canyon, so I don't have a first-hand account of the terrain in that area.

Distance: 3.5 to 4.5 miles
Elevation gain: 1,800 to 2,000 feet
Time: 3-4 hours

Essential Gear

Good hiking shoes. The rocks are rough, so gloves will help.

No technical gear is needed.
